League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, nonprofit volunteer grassroots organization of women and men that has been active continuously in every state and thousands of communities since it was founded in l920. Its mission is to promote political responsibility through the informed and active participation of all citizens in their government.

The LWVCT believes that a sense of community is an essential element in a free and open society. The William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund has made possible a wonderful statewide project to open the windows of our minds and allow the free flow of dialogue play into the important issues of the day. "Community Conversations About Education" is a valuable tool for a community to rediscover their common ideals and identify their common flaws. The free and open exchange of ideas in a non-threatening environment has brought hundreds of Connecticut residents to a greater sense of community and a clearer definition of their goals.

League of Women Voters has produced the following resources and agreed to publish them on the Discovery site.

Web site Community Conversations About Education
The League of Women Voters, with support from the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund provides grants and technical assistance to communities wishing to hold a Community Conversation About Education. These local conversations are community-wide discussions that examine issues affecting children from preschool through high school (K-12). Communities involved in the Graustein Memorial Fund’s Discovery Initiative, Connecticut communities designated as priority or transitional school districts, or school systems with severe-needs schools are eligible to receive a grant. The goal of the conversations is to improve outcomes for children from birth through age eight by involving more citizens in defining and supporting community priorities.

Grant guidelines and an application may be downloaded from the League website.
