In New London, preschool teachers and kindergarten teachers met
on a monthly basis. This group hosted professional development opportunities
and provided support to area centers and kindergarten teachers.
One of their main goals was to improve the transition to kindergarten
for area preschool children. A variety of activities was planned
that ensured a smoother transition for children entering the public
schools.
The program was developed to ensure that Meriden's children were
ready to successfully make the transition into kindergarten. A summer
program was offered free of charge to families to prepare children
for kindergarten and public school. A curriculum was developed by
the Board of Education.
This program was developed to help ease
the transition fears of Middletown's preschoolers. Preschool classes
get the opportunity to go to a local elementary school and have a
snack in the cafeteria, play on the playground, and see a kindergarten
classroom. An added benefit of this program was that preschool teachers
learned what is expected of kindergartners and shared ideas with kindergarten
teachers.
