Meriden's Bookmobile needed to find a way to make the Bookmobile more accessible for minorities. A bilingual/bicultural staff person was hired. Additional resources appropriate for minority communities were also purchased for the Bookmobile.

In New London, the "Books for Babies" program distributes the book Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise-Brown to all newborns. Books are distributed in either English or Spanish. Parents can begin to share the joy of reading with their babies. The packet also includes a letter from the Superintendent of Schools, which introduces the family to the New London Public Schools.

In Middletown, the Hospital Auxiliary with the Middletown CFI, Atticus Books, and the Middlesex Coalition on Children has created a program to give all newborns in Middletown a copy of Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise-Brown. This helps to encourage early literacy in all families in the community. It also gives families a way to get more information regarding early literacy.

To reach minorities and include them in the city's literacy efforts, the Meriden Literacy Volunteers planned three literacy events in minority communities. In the "Golden Books" project, books were collected so that families could have free books in their homes. A "Books for Babies" program was also started in Meriden.

Windham connected local college students with family childcare providers. The library provided storytime kits for college students to use at family childcare homes. This program may become a required internship for students in a specific education course on campus.
